Charlotte’s Essay

Charlotte’s essay symbolizes her desire for personal renewal. At the beginning of the novel, Charlotte realizes that she has many regrets and that she feels lonely. In the essay that she writes for the contest, she writes about a romantic tryst she had in her youth. Charlotte hopes that the cruise can reignite the sense of excitement she had during that brief romantic connection.

Minnie’s Death

Minnie’s death symbolizes the importance of friendship and adventure. Shortly before the time of the main narrative, Charlotte’s best friend Minnie dies. Charlotte feels saddened and lonely in the wake of this loss. Minnie was an upbeat and adventurous person, and Charlotte’s idea to go on a cruise is inspired in part by Minnie.
