Summary
In Chapter 28, the day after Isaac had taken 4-year-old Larry on a trip to the Golden Gate Park the boy found Isaac sprawled on the bathroom floor. He was dead. In therapy later, Larry told his therapist his discovery of his grandfather was the most significant one in his childhood. It marked the end of the happiest years of his childhood. Even though she went blind shortly after Isaac’s death, Lillian still gave Larry her unconditional love.
Alma saw Ichimei again at Isaac’s funeral. Ichimei introduced his wife, Delphine, to Alma. Alma waited two weeks, hoping Ichimei would reach out to her. She drove by the nursery once but couldn’t bring herself to stop. Finally, she called the nursery. She hung up when Delphine answered. She called several more times.
