Summary
About a week later, Adeline ran into Liberty Pascal, Dr. Gray’s new nurse, in Chapter 18. When Liberty offered her condolences for Adeline’s baby, the latter felt uncomfortable. Adeline quickly told Liberty that she would be finding a new doctor. She allowed Liberty to pass on the news with the idea that she and Dr. Gray could remain acquaintances of the Jane Austen Society. Later that day, the obviously upset Dr. Gray visited Adeline at her home. He asked why Adeline would switch doctors, questioning if she were angry with him for withholding her extra doses of morphine, which offended her. Dr. Gray danced around the subject of her baby as a possible reason for dismissing him, but Adeline denied this.
