Summary
The first meeting of the Jane Austen Society was held that December in Chapter 13. They established that their objective was to educate about literature, especially Jane Austen’s work. Adeline was appointed secretary, Dr. Gray, chairman, and Andrew, treasurer. Because of his role as the Knight estate solicitor, Andrew would not vote on matters of the property. Adam simply remained a member because of the demanding nature of his farm work. Their charitable endeavor would be legalized as such to avoid profit and taxation. According to Andrew, raising money for the cottage and approaching Frances with a proposal were the next steps.
