The Open Door

The open door is a sign of a presumption. The novel opens with Hannah’s claim that she should have known something was wrong when she saw that the door to the dorm room she shared with April was ajar. Instead, Hannah opened the door as if nothing was wrong. Hannah makes similar presumptions throughout the course of the investigation of April’s death. She presumes that because she saw Neville coming out of the stairway that led to the dorm room that he was the one who killed April. Hannah also presumes that April was really dead, not just playing a prank on her. She also presumes that Hugh was too kind to have had anything to do with April’s murder.
