Hugh Bland

Hugh Bland is the villain in the novel. He is the one who killed April and allowed Neville to go to jail for his crime. April arranged for a friend of hers to take Hugh’s entrance exams so that he would be guaranteed a place at Pelham. As payment, April bullied Hugh. She forced him to do what she wanted him to do, such as get her prescriptions for ADHD drugs from his father’s prescription pad.

Through Hannah’s investigation, she had believed that Hugh was the one person she could trust not to have been involved in April’s murder. He had been with her all night at the bar and had come to the dorm room only when Hannah screamed when she found April laying on the floor.
