Summary
Chapter 1 flashes back to the year 1764. Addie visits her father’s grave in Villon. Afterwards, she stops by Estele’s abandoned home. She plants a tree over Estele’s grave. Luc shows up and repeats his plea to take Addie’s soul. She slaps him across the face and Luc momentarily transforms her into an old woman, as a threat.
Chapter 2 resumes at the present moment. Henry invites Addie to move in with him. He sets aside a drawer for her things.
In Chapter 3, Adeline visits the small village of Fécamp. The year is 1778. Luc shows up one day as she is sitting on a hillside and brings her to a church. He offers to take her soul and once again, she insists on living.
Henry and Addie go to Grand Central Station...
