Summary

In Chapter 1, four years have passed since the shadows last visit. Addie dresses like a man in order to freely roam the streets of Paris. She bumps into a man in the street, and he notices her disguise. His name is Remy, and he brings Addie to a café. They joke around like two conspirators and Addie introduces herself as Thomas. Voltaire walks into the café and Remy is starstruck. Addie knows how to read but not well, and so she is unfamiliar with all the famous authors that Remy speaks of. Remy is the son of a printer who is fascinated by literature.
