Summary

Chapter 1 begins in New York City in the year 2014. It opens with Addie LaRue waking up in the bed of a man named Toby, a musician. She leaves him sleeping to go play the piano in his apartment. When Toby wakes up, he has no clue who Addie is. Addie tells him her name is Jess, since part of her curse involves not being able to tell anyone her real name. Addie and Toby have seen each other many times but her curse makes her forgettable to everyone who meets her.

In Chapter 2, it is Addie’s birthday. To treat herself, she shoplifts some clothes. She leaves all her clothes in the dressing room, except her beloved leather jacket, and walks out the store.
