Summary
Part One, Chapters Six and Seven
In Chapter Six, when Jonah Bay is eleven years old, Barry Claimes begins “borrowing” him from his mother. When they are alone, Claimes gives Jonah gum or other food spiked with a hallucinogen to help him create songs. At first, Jonah believes he is developing schizophrenia like his cousin. After awhile, Jonah realizes Claimes is drugging him and refuses to go with Claimes any longer. Not too long after this, Jonah hears one of the songs that he made up for Claimes on the radio. Knowing he can do nothing about the injustice, Jonah bears the anger and pain he feels every time he hears the song on the radio.
