Summary
In Chapter 15, at 5 p.m. Luke had been missing for at least 18 hours. Sigsby had alerted all of her stringers, people who worked in locations across America for the Institute, to keep an eye out for Luke. One of these stringers reported he found the boat Luke used to escape a few miles upriver from Presque Isle.
In Chapter 16, when the children were let out of their rooms for dinner, Frieda sat next to Avery in the cafeteria. Later, Avery asked Frieda if he could sleep with her. She agreed because she sensed Avery had a secret. When Avery was asleep, Frieda asked him where Luke had gone. She promised that she would not tell. Avery, still mostly asleep, told her that he had gone up the red steps.
