Summary

Chapter 1 begins with a brief description of Ada, Oklahoma, a small town in Oklahoma that originally developed around the oil drilling industry, but which is now sustained by factory work. On December 7, 1982, a young woman named Debbie Carter was working a shift at a bar called the Coachlight on the edge of town. She was followed home that night by a local man named Glen Gore. The next day, a friend of Debbie’s went to Debbie’s apartment and found her dead with a bloody washcloth in her mouth. The police arrived and surveyed the scene. The apartment was in complete disarray as if due to a massive struggle.
