Young Gay Men
Development of the play’s story, plot, and themes is constructed around the experiences of young gay men. The sense of the piece being about a community rather than about a particular individual begins with the Prologue, in which members of this particular community appear onstage without a sense of any of them having an individual identity. Individuals emerge from the chorus and take on different identities, and as the narrative unfolds, it focuses on those individuals. There is still, however, the overall sense that the piece is focused on the experiences, perspectives, and values of a particular group – specifically, a generation of young gay men coming of creative and socially aware age in the second decade of the twenty-first century. The individual characters portrayed by the Chorus functioning as examples of the experiences, perspectives, and needs of that generation.
