Summary
As Scene One of Act Three begins, the Chorus of Young Men describes Toby’s visit to Alabama, the state where he was born and raised. Toby, speaking of himself in the third person, joins the Chorus in describing his arrival, his contemplations of his family history (discovering his father’s suicide, enduring his alcoholic and dismissive mother, years of bullying and poverty), and his realization that he has a choice – heal himself, or destroy himself. Toby chooses to heal himself, and spends months in his hotel room writing a play that he believes is his truth, a play – titled "Lost Boy" – that he believes will be an even more successful follow-up to his first play, "Loved Boy." He then sends it to his agent, and drives all night back to New York.
