Point of View

This story is told by first-person narrator Avery. Her narration is biased and limited. Consider Avery’s comment in connection with the death of her mother: “We played every week, right up until I was fifteen and one of her secrets landed her in the hospital” (1). Avery refers to herself as “I” (1) and to her and her mother as “We” (1) which are pronouns used in conjunction with the first-person point of view. Avery shares with her reader that she has no knowledge of any of the other characters’ thoughts or emotions unless they share them with her when she indicates it was a surprise to her when her mother got sick and died.
