Summary

Chapter 14 returns to John Leal who refused to answer questions about why he returned to Noxhurst after leaving China, instead only telling his followers that God wanted him there and that God wanted them too.

In Chapter 15, Phoebe recalled having a picnic with Will. Phoebe appreciated Will because she could rely on him to keep his word. Phoebe did not really want to have sex with Will when they first started sleeping together, but did so to please him.

Chapter 16 is told from Will’s perspective. In the summer, Will went to Beijing for an internship. Phoebe had to stay in Edwards to take remedial classes because she was at risk of failing. She planned to join Will later in the summer.
