Summary

When Chapter 14 begins, it is 1988. Klara and Raj are running a successful magic act, and Klara gives birth to a baby girl who they call Ruby. Klara continues to hear the knocks she believes are messages from Simon, but Raj claims not to hear them. He suggests they take their magic show to Las Vegas, but Klara is reluctant.

Klara recalls coming downstairs at 72 Clinton Street as a teenager and working on her magic. One night she did this and came upon her father reading the Torah. She showed him some tricks and he told her a story about his own father explaining Israel to him, and how it would always be his home.

In Chapter 15, Klara and Raj buy a motor home and take their act around California. Klara has begun drinking heavily in secret. She thinks of the fortune...
