Summary
In Chapter 11, “Spread” (155), the other girls began showing symptoms of illness similar to Eliza's, mostly rashes and fainting spells, but Abigail also developed a speech impediment. Caroline visited Eliza's room and asked if she had any insight into what was happening. She did not. The next morning, after a snowstorm, the girls came downstairs in their nightclothes, walked outside, and sat in the snow. They claimed they were too hot and could barely breathe. The adults convinced them to go back inside. They visited Meg and Livia's room and asked them about their symptoms. As the girls explained, Caroline began to feel tingling in one of her fingers.
