Summary
In Chapter 5, “Couched” (55), classes continued and the students flourished. Caroline had the girls act out scenes from A Midsummer Night's Dream. David approached Caroline and said there was something he needed to tell her, but when he saw she was reading, he claimed it could wait until another time. Caroline fantasized about the things he might have been planning to say. Sitting outside later, Caroline saw a trilling heart with what looked like a lock of hair in its beak.
A famous educator named Thoreson visited the school and Samuel allowed him to sit in on classes. Thoreson had misgivings about teaching girls more challenging subjects, but was impressed with the students' academic performance.
