Summary
In Chapter Fifty-five, Polly’s surgery is over. Cecilia cries thinking of the life her daughter will face. She wonders if the child is strong enough. John-Paul says she is, but he asks Cecilia why she told. Cecilia explains that it was because Rachel was trying to hit Connor because she thought he was the one who killed Janie. John-Paul realizes if he had confessed, this might not have happened. He crouches in the corner of the room. Cecilia’s mind is at work.
