Summary
On the phone, Ian tells Tony they did not get anything from Kolb, and Tony says that Anneliese seems normal enough, but he will check her out regardless. At a diner, Ian and Nina are discussing Kolb when Nina asks why Ian mutters in his sleep, and when he tries to brush it off, she answers, "is something, or else why is it your lake?" (313). Ian gives in and tells her a story of his time as a war correspondent, when he parachuted into Germany with American troops. While the rest of the men made it to the ground safely, he and a young private named Donald Luncey got their parachutes tangled up in some trees, dangling twelve meters above the ground. Sustaining an injury to his lungs, Luncey died slowly over the course of seven hours before Ian's eyes. He then began...
