Summary
Again, back before the war, Nina is out hunting one day when she sees a plane crash into the woods nearby, which she had never seen before, although "village traders who had been to Irkutsk claimed to have seen them" (59). Nina approaches the pilot, and he tells her he was on his way to Moscow before crashing from engine trouble. Nina is transfixed, and after the pilot repairs his plane and flies away, she leaves to go to the town of Irkutsk to join to the air club there, thinking to herself "I never knew I could have the sky" (62).
