Summary
Chapter 13 is titled “Heather,” and picks up on January 2 as she and Doug are walking toward the site of the body. Heather enters the water of the loch each day. The first time, she intended to drown herself but found her will to live was stronger. She feels most alive when her body is “so cold that it grips you like a vise and squeezes all thoughts from your mind” (75). She once saw Doug swim in the loch as well, and felt disloyal because she stared at him during that private time. She becomes aware that she and Doug are completely alone, and that she knows very little about him.
