Summary
Bat ruminates on the state of his basement apartment he now shares with Harry. As he looks around, he feels a new appreciation for his space. He hopes that even if his plans do not come to fruition, one of his friends will be able to accomplish their dreams. To Bat, it does not matter who experiences good fortune, as long as he is able to share in it. He hypothesizes that a man’s ambition is boundless when he is given a little push. He imagines a man who is happy earning ten pounds per week when he is suddenly given one hundred pounds. This man then realizes that he wants to get a car, a boat, and a beautiful woman.
