Gaslighting

The author uses the theme of gaslighting to demonstrate how people use control for various motivations.

Since Part I focuses on Millie as the narrator, the reader is unaware that Andrew is the character most guilty of gaslighting those around him. Andrew is revealed to be sadistic in his approach to punishment, which Andrew doles out to whomever he believes is most deserving. It is indicated that Kathleen, Andrew’s first fiancée, was likely a victim of Andrew’s punishments. Yet, it is not until the narration shifts to Nina’s point of view that Andrew is seen in a different light. It is as though the author has gaslighted the reader into thinking that Andrew may be the savior for Millie. Instead, while Andrew looks like the nice guy who is stuck in an unfulfilling marriage, he is revealed to be Nina’s abuser...
