Point of View

The Housemaid is a dual point-of-view novel divided into three parts. Part I is narrated by Millie. Part II is narrated by Nina. Part III is narrated by both Millie and Nina in different chapters. The Prologue has an unidentified narrator, who is later revealed to be Nina. The primary events of the novel take place over several weeks.

Millie’s narration gives the perspective of a young woman who has recently been released from prison. Millie tries to keep her criminal record hidden and does not want people to know that she was in prison for murder. While Millie is in her twenties, much of her life’s experience is rooted in her teens. Millie suffers from some arrested development.
