Section 5: Chapters 11 & 12 Summary
In Chapter 11: The Giving and Taking of Gifts, as Matt wanders around the garden, he moves Tom's place card to the baby table, but this makes Maria angry. After dinner, El Patron tells Matt he can tell how much someone loves him by the size of their gift as he opens the elaborate gifts everyone had given him. Matt opens gifts from El Patron and Celia, but Maria decides not to give a gift to him, flinging it away. Matt, intending to punish her for insulting him in front of everyone, insists she bring it to him and give him a birthday kiss. When Senator Mendoza objects because Matt is a clone, El Patron grows dark and dangerous in anger, making Matt sorry for starting the whole affair.
