Summary
In Chapter 38, Mother Margaret called Eleanor and William to say they were experiencing a delay in the paperwork. Eleanor worried the delay meant there was something wrong with the baby, but William assured her that everything was okay.
In Chapter 39, Ruby was in and out of consciousness as the doctor tried to deliver her baby with forceps. He told her to push, but she did not understand what he wanted. So, he performed an episiotomy instead. The nurses held Ruby down and told her to be quiet. When the baby was born, Ruby asked if it was a boy or girl, but no one answered her. The doctor stitched Ruby’s episiotomy without giving her any pain medicine. When he was finished, he told Ruby to rest. They walked out of the room with the baby. Ruby longed for her...
