Summary

In Chapter 30, Rose stopped by and introduced Eleanor to Bernie, the man she had hired to fix up the nursery. One day, Eleanor went upstairs when she heard Bernie singing a song that she recognized. They talked some about his background. As they continued to talk while he worked, Eleanor was surprised by how easy their conversations came.

That evening, Eleanor attended an event at which Rose had deemed she needed to make a showing. It was a memorial fundraiser for Dr. Charles Drew. Eleanor heard rumors that Drew had suffered injuries in a racist Southern town and was put in a segregated hospital where he was left unattended. It was said that he was denied the blood plasma that he had helped develop. William’s father claimed the hospital had plasma, but it was labeled for Whites only.
