Summary

Part 2 of the novel is set one year later in June of 1950.

In Chapter 15, when Ruby gagged and dry-heaved, Marie knew immediately that Ruby was pregnant. Ruby was hurt when Marie called her a “fast ass” (140).

Ten months after Ruby broke up with Shimmy, Shimmy gave Ruby a note inviting her to meet him at the candy store. He claimed he had something important to tell her. Instead, he had candles and dinner laid out for her in the storeroom. Ruby wondered why she had not listened to her good sense and stayed at home.

Shimmy seduced Ruby with the idea that he understood her better since he had been at college. Even though Ruby knew it was not a good idea, she missed Shimmy and so she snuck around to see him on the weekends. One night in the storeroom of...
