Summary
In Chapter 7, Shimmy picked Ruby up in the alleyway and Ruby hid in the backseat of his car. As Shimmy drove, Ruby told him about her dreams of being a doctor. Shimmy commented that he never heard of a “Colored” (70) doctor. Ruby corrected Shimmy and told him it was “Negro” (70) and asked if he had never heard of Dr. Charles Drew who was a Black surgeon and founder of the blood bank.
Shimmy pulled up on the far side of Fairmount Park where they could hear the music, but not be part of the crowd.
When Ruby arrived home, she was surprised to see Marie was at home, not at work like Ruby believed she would be. When Marie learned that Ruby had been with Shimmy, Marie warned Ruby to stop seeing him immediately.
