Summary
In Chapter Seventeen, Sun Yat Sen was expelled from Penang by the authorities. Arthur and Lesley stood together at the docks to watch him leave. Arthur explained to Lesley that he had a symbol carved onto the front doors of the House of Doors which appears at the front of books by Somerset Maugham, with the intention of warding away bad luck. Arthur told Lesley that he was going to China with Sun Yat Sen to help fight for the revolution. They agreed not to contact each other in his absence but that they would meet again in Penang at the House of Doors if he ever returned. Lesley had a necklace made for Arthur with the symbol from Somerset Maugham’s novels. Lesley kept her key for the House of Doors.
