Summary

Book Two begins with Chapter Eight which takes place in Penang in 1910 and is told from the perspective of Lesley. Lesley recalled the day that Robert told her a friend had asked to introduce him to a Chinese revolutionary named Sun Yat Sen. Lesley read in the newspaper that her friend Ethel Proudlock had been arrested after shooting and killing a man who had tried to rape her. Lesley resolved to visit Ethel in Kuala Lumpur. She recalled her last visit to see Ethel in KL when Ethel had told Lesley she was having an affair.

Later that day, Lesley bumped into her brother Geoff. They had lunch together and he told Lesley that Robert was having an affair. At home, Lesley considered confronting Robert and asking for a divorce, but she decided that would make her life too...
