Chapters 5-7 Summary
In chapter 5, Thomas tells his father about the breathing sound in the tunnel. Mr. Small walks through the tunnel, but does not see or hear anything. Mr. Small takes the mechanism out of both the sliding kitchen wall and the tunnel entrance under the porch to keep Thomas or anyone else from getting into the tunnel again unescorted. Over their meal, Thomas and his father discuss all the tunnels that exist in the house.
In chapter 6, Thomas goes outside to look all around the house so that he might be able to guess where all the secret passages and rooms might be. Thomas climbs the hill in an attempt to see the house more clearly. Thomas lays in the grass and falls asleep for a short time. When Thomas wakes, he again hears the sighing sound again. Thomas begins to walk...
