Coil

The coil is a symbol of the loss of hope. Annie asks to be fitted with this coil, which is supposed to keep her from getting pregnant, after her fourth miscarriage. When Annie is pregnant after her affair with Tom, it is discovered that the coil had broken.

Snow Chains

The snow chains are a symbol of coincidence. Many coincidences, including Wayne’s lack of snow chains, contributed to the wreck that killed Judith and Gulliver and injured Grace and Pilgrim.

Amputated Leg

The amputated leg is a symbol of disability or imperfection. Annie has trouble dealing with Grace’s injury because it means that her daughter is no longer perfect. Later, Grace admits to her mother that she has always felt pressure to be perfect because she is an only child. She later asks her mother what man will want her with her disability.
