Grace Maclean
Grace Maclean is the 13-year-old daughter of Robert and Annie Maclean. Grace’s life is changed when she and her best friend, Judith, are in a riding accident. Judith and her horse, Gulliver, are killed. Grace and her horse, Pilgrim, are both badly injured. Grace’s right leg must be amputated because it was run over by the tractor-trailer rig. Grace is forced to come to terms with her feelings that she could have kept her friend from being killed if she had made different decisions and her own body will never be whole again after one of her legs is amputated.
At first, Grace says that she does not want to ride Pilgrim again and wants him sent back to the farm in Kentucky from where they bought him. When Tom tells Grace he will only work with Pilgrim if Grace agrees to help, Grace concedes...
