Summary
In Chapter 1, Grace Maclean woke early to discover that it had snowed. She left a note for her father, Robert, that she was going riding. Her mother, Annie, editor-in-chief for a publishing group, would be joining them in Chatham later that morning. As usual, she had to stay in New York to work.
Meanwhile, Wayne Tanner, a truck driver, had been forced to take a break overnight when a trooper asked to see his real logbook. Wayne woke to discover it had snowed and he had neglected to bring his chains. He was not concerned about the interstate, but he had to deliver to a pulp mill in Chatham and would have to drive on back roads.
Judith, 14, and Grace, 13, met at the barn to saddle their horses, Gulliver and Pilgrim, for their morning ride. They decided to take a longer ride...
