Still reeling from Frost's death, Jerry is told to find Charlie Marshall. Jerry makes some inquiries and finds a book store where Charlie is known to frequent. Jerry asks about Charlie there and is given an address in Phnom Penh. Jerry buys Candid by Voltaire for Charlie because he is told Charlie likes French literature, hoping the gift will win him Charlie's favor. As soon as Jerry arrives in Phnom Penh, he goes to the address he has for Charlie. However, no one will answer the door. Charlie leaves a note and then goes to his hotel.
