Jerry spends a week in London with his stepmother, where he reflects on his father's death and the penniless state in which he left Jerry and his stepmother. Jerry then procures a job with a local newspaper to report on Hong Kong. Jerry visits with Smiley, his true reason for going to Hong Kong.
