George Smiley has been made head of the London office of the British Secret Service in the wake of his good friend Bill Haydon's revealed betrayal. This betrayal has been a double blow to Smiley who has also separated from his wife. Smiley practically lives at his office under the shadow of a huge photo he has blown up and hung in his office. The photo is of Karla, the Russian spy believed to have been Bill Haydon's recruiter and handler.
