Chapter 6: How Brigitte Came

Brigitte returns home with several bags full of food in. The people in town who have a lot of money aren't entitled to the government food. A lot of people in Hard Pan are unemployed or disabled and need help. Brigitte tells Miles that she came to take care of Lucky because she had always wanted to see California. Lucky's father paid for her travel and she flew into Los Angeles. Lucky's father has rented her a car which Brigitte drives through the city out into the desert until she finds Hard Pan.

When she arrives in Hard Pan, Brigitte does not know where Lucky lived since her father was in San Francisco. She notices a house with a glass tower. When she knocks on the door, the Captain answers the door. He has long gray hair...
