Sally
Sally is one of the main characters and first person narrators of the novel. All of the sections labeled as "Sally" are told from Sally's first person point of view.
When Sally is a little girl, she grows up with her grandfather, Grandy, in his cottage in the village. Because Grandy is the only person upon whom she can rely, Sally learns to define her life, character, and world according to her relationship with him. However, as Sally grows up, she begins to realize that she wants a life beyond the insular village in which she has spent her childhood. She therefore ventures off to university, leaving Grandy behind.
Although Sally misses Grandy when she moves away for school, she struggles to keep in touch with him. She appreciates the letters that he writes to her, but most often only writes a few lines in response. In spite...
