Summary
In “Caro,” while Pauly relied on the egrets and Sally on the garden, Caro relied on running to survive. It distracted her from “what was happening” (209). Although running eased her anxieties, they returned whenever she was still. Since the rain started, Grandy had grown slower. Caro worried Pauly was too attached to Grandy and he would die soon.
In “Sally,” before Christmas, the vicar visited while Sally, Paul, Caro, and Grandy were baking. The evening felt festive. The vicar revealed he was holding “one last service” before everyone left the village (215).
Although Sally felt disoriented spending the holiday “in the high house,” she also felt “such love, such happiness” (217).
In “Pauly,” Grandy explained the concept of prayer to Pauly. Although Grandy had not been to church in some time, he found comfort in it.
