Summary

In Chapter 4, “Pauly,” Pauly remembers his first summer at high house. He remembers the time he spent with Grandy.

In “Caro,” instead of asking Caro what they were doing at high house, Pauly asked about “the names of birds or flowers” (166). While watching Pauly swim with Sally one day, Caro realized Sally was “the other half” Pauly needed (167).

In “Pauly,” years later, Sally, Caro, and Pauly reminisce about their first summer together. They remember Grandy.

In “Caro,” the group occupied themselves by gardening, tending chickens, and running. Running was the only thing that calmed Caro.
