Summary
In Chapter 16, Matthew thinks about his mother, Mrs. Venn. They had been estranged after Matthew publicly renounced his faith. In one way, estrangement was easier because contact with his mother carries responsibilities. He thinks about the fact that she will someday need care and he is her only child. He picks her up a few minutes early. She is dressed in the clothes she likely wore to the Brethren's meeting that morning. He mentions his father, and Mrs. Venn says she would die of loneliness without the other members of the Brethren. Matthew is momentarily shocked to realize these people are providing friendship for her, having thought she remained just to be stubborn. Jonathan meets them at the door.
