Part 1: Chapters 9-11 Summary
In chapter nine, Aerin makes a large batch of kenet and asks Teka for permission to travel alone with Talat. Teka refuses to give Aerin permission, insisting that she ask her father. Aerin has breakfast with her father and receives permission. They head out the next day, traveling far enough away to keep the smoke of a large fire from attracting attention. Aerin dons a set of clothing that she has soaked in kenet and then rubs the ointment on her exposed skin. When Aerin walks into the fire, she is surprised to find it does not burn. Aerin then rubs the ointment on Talat and leads him into the fire. The ointment works on the horse as well.
