Chapters 31-34 Summary
Chapter 31: Aibileen
Aibileen eavesdrops and hears Hilly say that she thinks the book is about Jackson and says she is determined that she is going to find out the identity of everyone in the book. Elizabeth reads through her chapter and must not realize it is about her.
Mae Mobley comes home and cries because she had gotten in trouble at school because she had colored a picture and made herself black.
Aibileen sees Mrs. Brown in the Jitney and they overhear women talking about them and the book.
Chapter 32: Minny
"Another day passes, and I can still hear Miss Hilly's voice talking the words, reading the lines. I don't hear the scream. Not yet. But she's getting close." (Chap. 32, p. 411)
Minny thinks about why Leroy beats her and wonders what she could become if he stopped hitting her.
