Summary
Chapter 28 picks up on Thursday, April 22, still in the basement on Capitol Hill. Charlie and Margaret are shocked that Street is working with Leopold and Carlin. Leopold and Carlin laugh but Strongfellow looks uncomfortable. Charlie begins asking questions and Carlin tells him what brought them to this point. Van Waganan learned the truth about the “broadleaf” study. The Hellfire Club assigned a woman to keep an eye on him. There is an aside as Street points out that Carlin is about to say that someone in the room has to kill Charlie and Margaret, meaning that he, Strongfellow, or one of the two men who traveled with Leopold will have to do so. This prompts a discussion by Street and Strongfellow about their guns. Charlie asks about all the people and animals dying because of the chemical plants. Carlin says they are not...
