Summary
Chapter 25 picks up after the comic-book hearing, on Wednesday, April 21. Charlie and Street meet at a a tavern in New York where Charlie knows a Black man talking with a White man will not prompt attention. Street announces he has good news but Carlin's “right-hand man” interrupts. Abner Lance tells Charlie the reporters have already been instructed to ignore Charlie's statements at the comic-book hearing and accuses Charlie of stealing the “dossier of classified information” (267). Lance says he has some photographs of a night when Charlie “recklessly and drunkenly” wrecked, killing a young woman. Street interrupts, saying he has some interesting photos of his own. Lance snatches them up. Charlie tries to seem unconcerned, as if he knows about these photos.
