Summary
Chapter 22 takes place more than a month later, Tuesday, April 20. Margaret is feeling much better with regard to the pregnancy. She and Charlie have just had sex. Charlie goes to play poker that night and discovers LaMontagne has become a regular attendee. LaMontagne says he and Cohn may want Charlie to give the Strongfellow dossier to the press. Charlie notes LaMontagne does not even consider that Charlie refuse. Strongfellow says 6,000 sheep have died in his district in Utah. Cohn had just instructed him to stop asking about it. Street wins an impressive pot from LaMontagne, prompting LaMontagne to leave. Street notes that everyone underestimates “The angry Negro.” Someone calls the off-suit jack “illegitimate” which starts Charlie thinking. He calls Bernstein and Margaret, instructing them to meet him at the library. There, Margaret calls the display of Lincoln's items “spooky,” echoing Bernstein's earlier statement...
